2024 is unquestionably going to be remembered as the year that AI (more specifically, generative AI) was added to every app, program, and operating system. By the end of the year, it won’t surprise me if we have AI-powered televisions, ovens, security cameras, even on-board AI in cars. Imagine, chatting with your vehicle while it drives you to work or school!
Given what appears to be an enormous pot of gold at the end of this AI rainbow, it’s no surprise that there are dozens of companies large and small vying to have the best interactive AI system. All the big tech companies, from Google to Apple, Facebook to Microsoft, and rapidly expanding startups like OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Claude, have their own “chat” interfaces we can try with just a click.
I’ve been involved with this sector for quite a while and one of my go-to systems goes by the curious name of Perplexity. Found at perplexity.ai online, it’s a darn impressive business, valued at over $1 billion dollars with only 55 employees. Without much fanfare, the company struck a deal with Comcast Xfinity through the Xfinity Rewards program and if you’re an Xfinity subscriber, you can get a year of Perplexity Pro (a far more sophisticated AI engine) with just a few clicks! Here’s how…
SIGN IN TO XFINITY REWARDS
To start, hop over to www.xfinity.com/rewards/ …
If you’re already a rewards member, click on “Sign in” at the bottom, or click on “Get started” to proceed. As always, look at the URL in the address bar to make sure it’s the domain you expect – xfinity.com – and that the padlock is closed. This helps ensure you don’t end up on a phishing site from some scammer.
Notice that this offers helpful links for you create a new Xfinity ID (you’ll want a copy of your bill handy) or find your Xfinity ID. I already know mine, so just sign in…
You’ll then see a grid of offers and promos that are part of the current set of Xfinity Rewards. Here are four interesting options I see:

Scrolling down just a bit further, however, and our Perplexity offer appears:

Notice the small print: You can share it with up to 7 friends too, so each code is good for 12-months of free Perplexity Pro for eight people total, and the other seven don’t need to be Xfinity subscribers either!
Pretty good deal, all in all. Ready to proceed? View the Terms and Conditions, then click on “Get this reward“.
Just about done. Click on “Copy Code” to get your secret code, then click on “Visit Perplexity Pro“, which will move you to the Perplexity site:
Again, check the URL in the address bar – it should be “www.perplexity.ai” – and if it’s looking good, paste the code you just copied into the “Promo Code” box to proceed. Click “Continue” once it’s done.
You can now grab a copy of the Perplexity AI app for your smartphone, if desired, as it prompts:
If you don’t want yet another mobile app, just click on “Continue” on the top right to proceed.

One you click, you’ll go straight to the main Perplexity interface, where it’ll be immediately obvious that you now have a Pro account:
Any time you want to get to Perplexity, either bookmark the site or just type in “perplexity.ai”. You’ve a Pro account so you get the best possible set of features, including: a much higher daily search limit, the ability to choose between AI models (including GPT-4o, Claude 3, and Llama 3.1), unlimited file uploads, access to a variety of image generation tools and access to premium support. Value: $20/month.
If you already have Perplexity on your mobile, quit the program and start it up again and you’ll see it bump from regular Perplexity to Perplexity Pro (it’s a bit more subtle):
